Is there a way I can adjust pickup height and pole piece height to make a pickup brighter?
A friend left his Epi Les Paul Studio at my house, and though I believe I can make any guitar fun, this guitar just doesn't inspire me. It sounds like there's a blanket over the tone. I cannot get any brightness or personality out of it.
Is there any way I can open up the tone a bit by just adjusting the pickups (i.e. free)? It just may be the electronics need a total overhaul. But since it's not my guitar I'm not going to spend any money on it.

You can try adjusting the pole pieces. I'd try just adjusting the height of the pickup too.. If its factory settings, it could be WAY off. Raise it up and maybe youll find a hotspot

raising the pickup and/or pole pieces will help to a point, but most likely the guitar will need better pickups to sound good.
If you have an EQ pedal you may get better results with that.

I'm assuming raising the pole pieces do the same. What effect does raising the pole-pieces have? I always thought pole-piece adjustment was for fine tuning. Lowering the pickups seem to change the tone a bit, not only to a lower volume, but a slightly lighter tone. I've heard some describe it as "sweeter." Is that about as much as I can do to brighten the tone? Great idea! I think EQ pedals are way under-rated. It seems like people would rather spend a whole lot more money on new pickups, etc. to change tone.

I always thought pole-piece adjustment was for fine tuning. Raising the polepieces closer to the bridge will make it brighter becauise the closer you get to the bridge the brighter the tone is. Frankly, teh eq pedal is the easiest and most effective way to change the tone. You can make radical changes that you would never be able to do by just adjusting the pickups.
