other day I was at a hock shop and picked up a bass there. The strings on it were enclosed in like a black plastic sleeve. (not elixers) Anyhow, the looked cool, felt good and seemed to sound ok. Any idea who makes these and are they actually worth a darn??

depends on what kind of tone you're after on a bass.
Make? no idea.
Tone? my experience is that they're sort of like flatwounds but even moreso. I prefer the grunt and growl of the hotter stuff....like rotosounds or similar.

there are several brands that make that type of string.. the idea is to give more of "upright"bass tone and minimize string squeaks when doing walking bass lines.. they're mainly used by Jazz/R&B players.... a lot of fretless players use them as well since they're easier on a fretless fretboard
