my band wants me to record direct into the mixer with no effects. I really hate this option. Is there a better way? Can my amp go into the mixer and then the computer? It is a peavey JSX. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

you would need and attenuator/load box and a speaker emulator. I had great success running my heads into a weber lite mass attenuator and a Behringer Ultra G DI box directly into my computer it sounds great.
You can also use a POD or another modeler to get a dry amp sound into the mixer, it's not the same thing as a real amp but close enough if you take the time to get a good tone out of it.

I think that using mics is the way to go these dayze. The resulting sound is more alive and immediate. The studio I work at typically prefers mic'ing than room separation and they put out nothing but gold and platinum CDs ... The House of Loud, here's a Mix online article on them - HOL and a video by the band they're recording right now, The Urgency - The Urgency at the HOL
