Any of you fellas played one of these??? Im itching for an amp upgrade.. There are a bunch of amps Id love to have but none I can afford. Bogner Ecstasy EVH ( which Ive heard are having reliability issues) Engl Powerball Fender Prosonic (maybe) Soldano SLO But I also love what Ive heard of the Quickrods and the Kerry King marshalls. I love the old 80s tones of hotrodded marshalls and stock ones dont cut it.. I like that hollow woody tone like in Strypers The Way solo...
So whatcha think

Splawns are basically Hot Rodded Marshalls, which mean you have to play them LOUD to get the best out of them Are you gigging now? Playing with a band?? If you're not, forget it, it is not worth it.
What is your current amp? What's missing on it??

Im still running the Peavey Ultra Plus and Carvin MTS 4x12. Its not a bad sounding amp, but I cant get that Woody open hollow tone out of it that I love so much. I love that tone like on Strypers to Hell with the Devil album and many 80s metal records and I know I cant play a Marshall wide open like that.. So, most marshalls disappoint me. My amp is more modern gain I think. I end up playing with alot more distortion than I should because thats my favorite tone from this amp.. Ive tried bumping the mids on the crunch channel and its not the same. I can come get a hint of it when I use my Kramer Focus, but only a hint. Ive tried PAF pups and other different ones. Any tips ? If I could get that without dropping that kinda money, Id be stoked.

I have an Ultra Plus too. Great amp. You CAN get the tone you want out of it, but you would have to lower the gain AND turn up the master volume considerably. Use the 60w setting. Set the master volume to 10 and use the channels volume to control the overall loudness. But that gets painfully loud quickly. The tone you're talking about is very dependent on power amp distortion and unfortunately there is no way to get it from any amp other than turning it way up.
I also have a DSL50 and that amp sounds better than most of my other amps at a low volume. Maybe you should look into getting one, they're not so expensive.
Perhaps a good attenuator would help you more than a new amp.

What Ray said, about amps with EL84s, is also true. I think EL84s are the best tubes for people looking for crunch at a lower volume. You can convert a "big bottle" amp to EL84's using the THD Yellow Jackets or just buy a EL84 amp like the one Ray posted.

Thats sure sharp Ray!! Whats the damage for something like that?? Im NOT opposed to EL84s.. My PV CLassic 30 has em and sounds great. It just isnt heavy enough.. I get a great slash/creamy/classic tone from it. Funny, I played a new slash epi at GC the other day and it sounded like playing thru my Classic 30 since I put the Private jack in it. G, didnt know you had one of those.. Yeah, I stumbled on that a few weeks ago. I always dimed the channel volumes and put on the master a tiny bit. One day I thought " I need to push the pre amp" and did it the other way.. MUCH better. Im wondering if a tube change would get me closer?? I still have stockers from 2002. I know when I put JJs in my Classic, it was night /day.. Ive thought about a hot plate.. Just didnt know if it would really work .. Alot of money for an experiment..

yeah I have one, not my best amp (that would be the Mesa Mark III) but it's certainly the most versatile so I use it a lot.
I don't think tubes will make that much of a difference in this case. Maybe if you buy Groove Tubes that have a low rating (for earlier breakup). But even that will still be loud.
A good attenuator is one of the best investments you will ever make. Everyone who play big tube amps should have one. You can't crank the amp to 10 and attenuate it until it's at bedroom level, it doesn't sound good like that. But you can attenuate it to, say, half volume and have a much more usable volume pot. I can't live without mine.

I currently have a Mass Lite 100w and I love it. I had a 5150 for a while and I prefer the Ultra over the 5150.

Splawn Quickrod? I'll counter with Toad the Sprocket. What Ray sez - EL84's are the sh!t for low volume name-that-tone.
