Yeah, me again... I wanted to touch on something else and I know you guys have experience here. A couple of years ago, I bought a Burny Les Paul Copy from the 80s. It is hands down one of the best Les Pauls Ive EVER played. 11+ lbs of sustaining (back breaking) bliss. However.... I find that I dont play it much.. I asked myself why.?? Here is what I figured out.. It has EMG Zakk W set.. Although I cant say it doesnt sound good, cuz it does, I just cant feel a vibe in the tone. It is the only guitar I have with active pups and I like the fact that I have that option, but I cant help but feel this guitar could sound so much better with a sweeter set of pups. I wish I could just pop something else in without having rewire the whole thing. Im hearing that Duncan Blackouts have more mids and tone, but I cant spend that kind of $$ just to see. It may be that actives just arent my thing.. Any recommendations for getting the most tone from the emgs? Run higher mids or what? Thanks!

Any recommendations for getting the most tone from the emgs? Run higher mids or what? Thanks! Switch the pickups position, install the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck. Or better yet, trade your 81 for an 85 and use 85s in both positions. That's what I used to do on my good ol Explorer and it sounded great.

How is the 60?? Better than the 85? I spent some time with it this weekend and the pups werent so bad. Got a great creamy tone with the neck pup and high gain..
G, have you tried the Duncan Blackouts???

The 60 is great in the neck position especially for clean tones. The 85/60 combination would be killer. No I haven't tried the Blackouts yet.

I've tried a couple of EMG 89 s in a maple solid body guitar and they sounded quite sterile. What I was looking for was a pickup system that was not coloured in any way by the vagaries of design, and I guess I got more than I bargained for - if you know what I mean... While that sound was definately workable, and the dual sound choice was there too with the 89s, I have taken the project back to finding ways to get EMG EQ circuits (an SPC and a EXG circuit) with the pickups, as they need some sort of grit in their sound for my liking. In humbucker mode, the 89s replicate the 85 sound I believe, which is probably best described as EMG's spin on the PAF sound. So yeah, I get where you are coming from about the sound from the EMGs. Maybe sacrificing one of the tone pots for a EXG EQ circuit pot might liven up the humbucker sound a bit more?

I've never owned EMGs. I do have an EB Sterling bass with an active pickup and it sounds killer.
I also has a pretty comprehensive EQ circuit though.

Good info all! G, Im really on the fence about what to do there.. Do I spend the money to get a different emg or go to blackouts as they are supposed to have more tone.. Or.. Would this amazing beast be better with a good set of passives?? HMMM
I will say that I did spend some time with the guitar and worked on eq settings and found some good sounds.. just different than what Im used to.

try swapping positions first.. try the 85 in the bridge position and see if you like that better. You don't need to spend $$ to do that

True Bro!! I'll give that a whirl.. cant argue with no cost.. But wont that render my neck position about worthless? I guess not, as Ive seen several guitars that come with 81/81 in them..
Prob be a week or so before I can try this. Ill let you know
