First, I want to give a couple of mini reviews..
Im a tweaker. (Yes G, I said it) I am always trying to get the most from my guitars, and due to budget, I cant always just buy different pickups. So I change magnets and stuff.
I have found much joy in Alnico 8 magnets.
For those that dont know, the Duncan Custom, Custom Custom and Custom 5 are all the same pickup, just diff magnets.
Custom is ceramic, CC is alnico 2 and C5 is alnico 5. I have tried them with alnico 4, 3 and 8. I basically tune to what ever suits what Im looking for in that guitar. My favorite is the Custom 8. It has the power and crunch and chunk of the Duncan custom, but adds the warmth of an alnico pup. I find it is very expressive.
Funny, since Ive been preaching that, alnico 8 is gaining in popularity. Ibanez now has a new model out with A8 pups in it, Duncan made a limited run Crazy 8 pickup for it forum members. (Very cool pickup!!) and now Duncan has a new pup out Called the Alternative 8. This is an Awesome pickup! It is high output, but isnt high gain per se. It sounds HUGE. Big highs, but not piercing, big lows but no mud.. Its big like a Tone zone but over the whole range.. And it doesnt thin out when volume is rolled back. I cleans up nice. I think it would be a great pickup for using with effects. It doesnt color the sound, and isnt fizzy or distorted sounding. Its almost like a gain boost.
Best thing is it's very articulate. Even under high gain, individual notes are heard and it doesnt compress the signal.
Now, I ask this question.. Anyone tried WCR pickups?? Crossroads or Goodwood or fillmores? Ive heard raves about them, but I find that people tend to rave about expensive stuff (maybe to justify paying the cost) .. This is very common on the les paul forum..
I like the tone clips they have on the site, but I am skeptical as to how much is the amp and/or processing.. Im looking for something very sweet and warm.. allmanish.. I just wonder if they are all that or just expensive hype..
