Can the effects of different caps only be heard when you fiddle with the volume and tone controls, or is there a marked difference between different caps when the pots are wide open too?

honestly....my ears don't pick it up. I've drank that koolaid, and was like "ummmm, ok....". I'm just sayin'....maybe my ears aren't as good as the anal vintage homos.

I probably should add that I'm assuming you're talking about different brands....vintage vs new...that type of stuff.
Of course, different values will yield different results. But I'm thinking you know that, and that's not what you're talking about.

I guess there's more money to be made with Gibsons. Whatever.

Well if Ray and G.Mello can't hear a difference, I certainly won't!
I can hear the difference with different values of caps on the same pickups and pots, but it's minor in a lot of ways too.
I guess you are talking about those $20 + caps that supposedly were taken from the control cavity of Eric Clapton's lost/stolen Les Paul -that sort of hype.
Maybe over time, the better made caps will last longer, and maybe certain types of caps work better for guitar audio applications.
But I just don't hear that.
