Ok, so what's all the hoohah? Is it real? Is it lip service? Jumping on the bandwagon?
Hell, I don't know. But I will tell (and show) you what I found. First of all, Vinni is a good dude for sending me so many styles to try out. I've arranged this picture in the order of favorite on the left....least favorite on the right. And a Fender Medium for size reference. I'll number them 1-7, L-R.
1 - This pick is the one that really does it for me. The thickness is perfect. The taper (edges) are shaped in such a way that they actually do something to my pick attack that I wasn't at all expecting. You'd have to play it to know. I can't explain it in a way that the naysayers would ever believe. I didn't. Now I do. I found myself doing stuff that I haven't been able to do since I practiced 2-3 hrs a day years ago. I'm not BSing you guys. And the final element is the actual size and shape. It fits perfectly in the crease of my index finger's first joint with just the right ammount of tip sticking out for plucking...as seen here:
2 - Very similar to #1. Same thickness, but slightly bigger. I could use it, but it doesn't wow me like #1. Just big enough to NOT fit my fingers the way the first one does...
3 - Same thickness as 1&2, a similar size to #2...but with pointy tips. So, not only is the size not as good for me, but the pointy tips changes the pick attack which is one of the things I liked about #1. If the size is right for you and you like a little more plink in your attack than a thunk...you may like this one.
4 - Exactly the same as #3 except thinner. Not "pillowed" in the middle. So now we've got the wrong size...pointy tips...and less ideal thickness. Going downhill here.
5 - Ok...this thing is a ninja weapon. It's way too thick and way too big for me....and pointy tips. I could play with it, but I found myself tapping the middle pickup on my strat constantly. Also, I'm afraid I could break an unprecedented 3 strings at once with a power chord. Definately not for me.
6 - Same thickness as #4 (too thin...not "pillowed") pointy tips, smaller than the ideal sized #1. What's to like here?
7 - Thicker and pillowed, but this pick is tiny...so much so that it's hard for me to hold on to. NOPE...don't like it.
You can see that it practically disappears between my thumb and finger.
The thing about #1...after a few minutes you forget you've got a pick in you hand. I know, I know....but I'm not kidding you. Believe it or not that's my take on it. The rest of them? Well, I might have liked #2 well enough if I didn't have #1. The rest of them don't really do anything for me. Let me tell you something...these things do NOT bend. Not even a little bit. So if that's something you require, don't bother. Also, these things are expensive. But I'm guessing they'll last forever...unless you LOSE ONE. THEY'RE CLEAR....HELLOOO!
After playing for about an hour with #1, I picked up the Fender Medium, and could barely play at all with it. I was all over the place inaccurate.
Oh, BTW...here's a pic including the extra jumbo smellgood model. My wife kept that one.
