This is a great thread!! What type of guitars are you basing your evaluations on, Rob? Custom Thinline with Rio Classic Tallboys, heavily modded Bullet Strat with Keystones, heavily modded Vendetta with custom rewound AlNiCo V humbuckers. In my past experience, something like that could sound good with a fender then choke to death when you plug in a higher output HB guitar. Not really with the GA-5 ... the Weber Sig 8 speaker will fart out when really driven HARD - easily fixed with a mo' bettah speaker like a hefty Weber 8F150, or just run to an external cab. It's easy to add an 8 ohm external speaker tap as the OT allows that - cool!Shame on you for giving me amp GAS. Sorry! But if you can find it for $300 - GET THIS AMP!!!!!!!!!!!!I love the simplicity of this versus the pseudo simplicity of a Blues Jr. BJr's SUCK compared to the GA-5!I have three small amps, none of which get much play time. Blues Jr....not really in the same class as this amp. Electar T-10 Roland Micro Cube. IMHO the GA-5 will outclass them all in every way from tone, materials, components and build quality ... add in the the PJr, VJr, Champ 600 and Blackheart - I've taste tested them all, all are A$$ compared to the GA-5. I can't WAIT to buy another. ....

Well, I've been pretty good and have been holding off. And sure enough another GA-5 is up for sale on the FDP classifieds - the second one in a week. I can easily imagine myself having been that person who had succumbed to GAS. Perhaps more were will appear in classifieds at a lower price and, just maybe, I might nab one. Till then, I am going to enjoy reading Rob's post and daydreaming.
BTW, Rob, in your experience, is the GA-5 comparable to a SFChamp? How much overlap would there be between the two? One of the main reason GAS hasn't gotten the best of me yet on this amp is because I own a SFChamp.

One of the main reason GAS hasn't gotten the best of me yet on this amp is because I own a SFChamp. IMO, though the *stock* GA-5 has a very 5F1-like circuit, it isn't a Champ but it does have a tweed-like tone, an EXTREMELY tweedy tone. If you already have a vintage Champ, the primary reason you'd want a GA-5 is for its value.

So, in stock trim, does it get "farty" as small amps can?? I have a peavey classic 30 modded with JJs and an Eminence Private Jack speaker. What would I get that is different with this amp?
thanks! Great info!

Just got the Weber 8A125T in my hot li'l hands, pulled the 8F150 and stuck in the AlNiCo ... yeah baby, mo' bettah! Needless to say, the 8F150 is now on the Classifieds. The GearStrat partscaster with Keystone bridge single coil pup, Thinline partscaster with Lawrence L298TL bridge noiseless pup. Modded GA5, trinity minus NFB, 20/16/16 Atoms, JVT couplers, 8A125T. Zoom H2 field recorder, set 12" from speaker. For each recording the first lick is with GA5 vol at noon, 2nd and 3rd licks with vol at 11am, 11meg WAV files. Heavy Fender pick used, no picking fingers. StratThinline

So, in stock trim, does it get "farty" as small amps can?? Depends on what ya feed the GA5 and how ya play. Suffice to say, it's a modern version of the classic 5F1, and there's LOTS to mod to tailor the tone to yer tastes. I have a peavey classic 30 modded with JJs and an Eminence Private Jack speaker. What would I get that is different with this amp? Yer talkin' apples 'n' oranges - aside from having valves, a GA5 is quite different from a C30.thanks! Great info! ....

Hey Rob....I read (most of) the thread over at TDPRI...whew! I also posted in it (Raytone) about the 1.5k resistor between pin 7 and the vol pot. Anyway, it already had one. I'm thinking it may be the speaker that's causing the rattle. I took the chassis and speaker out of the cab just to be sure it wasn't the metal grill, and it was still there. I don't want to send it back. I like it, but want that sound to go away. Just to be clear, it sounds sort of like the passive sound a snare drum makes when the thingies aren't backed off...not loud of course, and it really mainly does it on the A and low E strings. I don't have a 4ohm speaker to try to see if it cures the problem...could I use a 8 ohm using the 4ohm tap? Would it be a poor test (it wouldn't be in the cabinet....don't have another 8 incher either... Also, will the Weber CAV8 fit in there without messing with the baffle? It shows as 8 1/8" on the site while the Sig shows as 8".
